Palmer Scholars staff hosted a drive-through Palmer Cares package distribution on August 5th. Palmer Cares, which was piloted in 2018, is a two-pronged initiative to ensure Scholars feel supported in their postsecondary journey regardless of how far away from Pierce County they may move.
The program has evolved with the needs of our Scholars. After its initial year, with feedback from our Scholars, we provided a $150 gift card for each Scholar to have their own dorm shopping experience that many of their more affluent peers may take for granted. In 2020, as students prepared for a full year in an online learning environment, we provided each Scholar with a laptop. This year, as Scholars return to campus ready to transition back to the classroom, the Palmer Cares packages mimic those of last school year.
“I want to give a big thank you from me and my family for all that Palmer Scholars has done to help me!” 2021 graduate Tiana said after receiving her package. Beginning the postsecondary journey is scary for many first-generation students. Through our Palmer Cares program, we are ensuring our Scholars are equipped with the support and tools to thrive from the moment they step foot on campus!
