We are excited to announce we are piloting a new program this year! Palmer Pathways, designed in partnership with Workforce Central, brings our wraparound services to some of the 15,300 young adults in Pierce County who are neither in school nor employed, connecting them to postsecondary education programs geared towards high-return/high-need careers in the trades.
According to WorkForce Central, careers in the trades, including health care, construction, and manufacturing are among the fastest growing in Pierce County, though there is a shortage of workers to fill these important roles. Palmer Pathways will connect its Scholars to postsecondary programs that will feed into these careers, guiding our Scholars to growing industries, union support, and livable wages.
Expanding our Services
As a result of this fruitful partnership, we are paving a second entry point and path for Pierce County’s youth to receive our services. Our high school entry program, which has operated for the past 36 years, will be referred to as our Legacy program, while this new program will be referred to as our Pathways program. This year, 15 eligible young adults will receive the same set of services as our Legacy Scholars, but with modifications to accommodate for the different barriers disconnected youth experience.
Filling a Need
Pierce County has a growing need in industry.
Palmer Pathways will also be tackling the diversity disparity in the trades. While careers in the trades have traditionally been occupied by white men, Palmer Pathways Scholars will bring a wealth of experience and vision to Pierce County’s trades and industries.
We are excited to expand our great work throughout Pierce County! Continue to follow our blog and social media for updates on the Palmer Pathways program.
